STRIPD TRAVELS: WATERGATE BAY HOTEL / CORNWALL

Despite my love for being by the sea during the summer, there’s something incredibly British about a beach trip in the autumn months. The waves crash harder, the wind blows faster and the idea of cosying up inside underneath a warm blanket seems all the more comforting – which is why my perfectly timed trip to Cornish retreat Watergate Bay Hotel came at the perfect time.

After an eight-week hiatus from my travel blogging, I’ve been welcomed back into the hospitable arms of one of the South West’s most enviable seaside hotels. Tucked away on the coastline of Newquay, this 1904 building sits adjacent to one of the county’s most popular surfing beaches – not to mention the picturesque South West Coast Path a stone’s throw away.

Pitched as a modern beach getaway for those looking to “live well and eat well”, Watergate Bay isn’t just your average British seaside holiday – nor is it trying to be. Guests come here to escape the noise of modern life and fully immerse themselves in the luxurious surroundings on offer (be sure to take advantage of the ocean-view infinity pool in the Swim Club), so don’t worry - you won’t find any noisy amusements here. Catering for modern day active-bodies as well, there’s also a well-equipped gym on site and the Extreme Surf Academy less than 200 yards away.

Rooms

Booking in for an overnight stay at Watergate Bay is a must if you’re wanting to experience the hotels full potential – plus, waking up to the sounds of the Atlantic Ocean is a moment you’ll want to savour. Each of the rooms are individually designed, but carry the same transcending theme – barefoot comfort, fresh coastal colour palettes and authentic exposed beechwood features. Paired with a beautiful ocean-side location, unwinding from everyday stresses and strains has never been so easy. Whether you choose standard or luxury, all rooms open up to panoramic views of the ocean – a prime location for sunsets spotting and tipple tasting, what more could you want?

Food

Another fabulous element worth mentioning is the in-house restaurant, Zacry’s – in my eyes, one of the best moments of my stay. If like me breakfast is your favourite way to start the day, then you're certainly in the right place - with fluffy homemade waffles (yes, that's right), creamy bircher muesli, indulgent full English delights and toast toppings on tap (be prepared full multiple helpings). Fast forward a few hours and the restaurant transforms ready for its evening guests. Championing British food with unique flavours from local Cornish ingredients, executive chef Neil Haydock has done a wonderful job of showcasing what delights are on offer within close radius. The seasonal two or three course menu (which changes every evening) offers both classic and contemporary dishes – giving both foodies and creatures of comfort something to choose from. The quirky interior style and relaxed atmosphere make this the perfect place to dine and unwind during your stay - request a table by the window in advance to catch the sunset, you’ll be in for a treat.

So, if you’re ready to swap your stresses and strains for a lovely taste of the Cornish coast, then be sure to take a visit to Watergate Bay Hotel. From surfing to snoozing, there’s plenty of restorative past-times to treat yourself to at this idyllic getaway – hey, life’s a beach really.

Rooms start from £161 / £208 incl. dinner
