STRIPD REVIEWS: DORSET HOUSE / LYME REGIS

Positioned proudly overlooking the seaside town of Lyme Regis, sits Dorset House – a stylish, independent boutique B&B with a credible foodie offering. Owned by Jason and Lyn Martin, this Regency building has been tastefully decorated to provide a restorative getaway as beautiful as its local surroundings. Team that with an equally special home-cooked breakfast experience, and you’ve got yourself two very good (self-explanatory) reasons to add this Dorset destination to your holiday hotlist.

The Room

There are five individually decorated rooms at Dorset House, each boasting their own distinct character. From the soft mattresses draped in Egyptian cotton linen and Hungarian down feather duvets, to the selection of DH bakes and in-room treats – every additional luxury is thought of, ensuring the most restorative of stays is had. 21st Century mod-cons are included for those that wish to use them (TV with DVD, WIFI), however your itinerary will be better filled by the company of the fluffy robes, DAB radio and cookery books provided. All bathrooms are fitted with luxurious walk-in rain showers, and come generously equipped with washroom essentials – you’ll even find a selection of therapeutic Bramley toiletries to treat your skin during your mini-break. With self-indulge at the forefront of Lyn and Jas’s intentions, it would be rude not to take full advantage of all their thoughtful touches whilst you have the chance (pre-ordered bottle of fizz included) – carpe diem right?

The Breakfast

After enjoying all the comforts of the DH rooms, guests are welcomed to enjoy a home-cooked breakfast around the communal dining table – the main event of the stay in this case. Not only are the cosy furnishings, soft grey tones, and sea shore glimpses enough to stir up an appetite - but the smell of delicious food being created in the kitchen certainly sets tongues wagging at pace too. This first meal of the day performs as it would during a lunchtime or evening restaurant set-up with starter, main and dessert courses to choose from. AGA baked granola; organic yoghurt and seasonal stewed fruit all await sampling before the cooked options are offered out. Of course, there’s a full English option for those with more traditional tastes; Devon Rose pork sausages, local eggs, tomato and mushrooms with sourdough or seeded bread. Alternatively, Lyn and Jason have also prepared a selection of trendier, health conscious options; super food porridge with nut butter, spelt pancakes and freshly presses juices. Highly recommended are the standout specials (changed daily) – a creative way to extend an already superb menu.

All food is cooked to order (and perfection), with dietary requirements catered for – just be sure to notify in advance. Whatever delicious dishes you decide on, the ambient surroundings will encourage you to savour each and every moment – as you should, this isn’t your average morning feeding.

With this impressive list of features, it’s clear to see why Dorset House has gained a number of accolades since it’s launch three years ago. With elegant décor, attentive hosts and unique charm oozing from every corner (particularly the in-house Honesty Bar), this getaway is sure to deliver more than just the usual B&B offering. With the company of stunning nearby coastal walks, independent shops (Ryder and Hope) and renowned restaurants (Hix Oyster & Fish House and River Cottage HQ) – long or short, your stay will be accommodated for.
